Legal Dance
With Legal Dance, Olga Dukhovna continues her iconoclastic and intimate exploration of dance history. A proponent of what she calls "choreographic recycling," she surrounds herself with three dancers, each embodying on stage a choreographer who changed their life. This unlikely quartet sets out to restart the world from scratch, questioning the origins of movements and the possibility of combining them without crossing into illegality. Do we have the right to borrow ? Where does homage end and plagiarism begin ? Are the choreographies of the past museums or sacred temples where venturing in risks profanation ? Is dance not, in essence, pure disobedience ? These heated debates play out on stage, quickly spiraling into chaos—to our great delight.
Through the utopian community of Legal Dance — where everyone takes turns juggling the roles of performer, creator, critic, and emerging legal expert — the choreographer raises fundamental questions about our place in the world : what freedom do our mentors leave us to find our own artistic liberty ? Which legacies must we betray to become who we truly are ?
